National
Science Week 2006
On Saturday 18th March, the Cambridge Genetics
Knowledge Park took part in the perennially popular Cambridge
Science Festival, this year entitled Planet and People. As
in previous years, the CGKP was a major contributor to the
genes themed Biology Zone, with an estimated 4000 visitors
to our stalls.
Activities for younger participants included badge-making
with the theme of XX and XY chromosomes, genetics colouring
and word searches, and a new balloon modelling stall providing
colourful DNA-helix style hats. For the older audience, there
were formal displays and information on the work of the CGKP/PHGU
and of the East of England Stem Cell Network, along with interactive
‘ELSI’ (ethical, legal and social issues) exercises.
Two alternative scenarios were displayed on lap-tops; visitors
keyed in their responses to the ethical dilemmas presented,
with a total of around 100 responses collected in the course
of the day.

to learn about genetic science

CGKP staff ask visitors to contribute their
own opinions about some science-related ethical issues.
